The U.S. Federal Government has created the ELD mandate explaining that all operators of commercial motor vehicles, both short and long haul, are covered under this law and will be required to use electronic logging devices (otherwise known as ELDs) in their operations. In short, the ELD mandate covers commercial driving operations that are required to keep hours of service records—that is, drivers or operators who were using paper logbooks before this rule was passed. The ELD rule became law on Feb. 16, 2016; however, the compliance date (the day when the use of ELDs in the described applications becomes mandatory) was on Dec. 18, 2017. For vehicles equipped with an AOBRD, or Automatic On-Board Recording Device, these units must be upgraded or replaced to meet full ELD status by Dec. 16, 2019.

With the new ELD mandate, trucking and logistics companies like Regal Services are going through this transformation, teaching drivers how to use them properly, and adapting to any additional learning curves that can arise with any new technology. With so many different FMCSA compliant ELD solutions and services, choosing the right company can be a difficult process.

Why Implement ELDs? Choosing the Right ELD for Logistics & Trucking Companies in PA & NY

ELDs streamline overall operations if used correctly. Aside from the ELD mandate, trucking and logistics companies that use these devices can provide insights about the company’s fleet, help reduce costs, minimize administrative burdens, and automate the day-to-day tasks of trucking. ELDs also:

  • Reduce paperwork
  • Keep up-to-date on driver status in real time
  • Enhance trucking safety
  • Reduce fuel costs by tracking gas, idle time, etc.
  • Minimize labor costs by tracking on-the-clock drivers to the minute, rather than rounding to an increment on paper logs
  • Have improved data tracking and analysis
  • And more

Choosing the right ELD is critical. Companies that make the wrong decision could end up with unreliable technology, added costs or unexpected fees, and the possibility of starting the process all over again. When companies look beyond the price and look at added features and security services, they look for the following features:

  • Easy installation of the device
  • Simple to operate
  • Driver report cards
  • Connectivity in real-time
  • Idle-time tracking
  • GPS tracking
  • Log auditing
  • Messaging/communication
  • Compatible with smartphones
  • Evolves with changing regulations/easy to upgrade

Alongside these features to look out for, companies also want to consider ELD providers based on certifications of compliance, customer service, and price.
